My Mother’s day, Meloncholy but fair and shifting
Yesterday was Mother’s Day. I got to spend the day with my family of birth on my mother’s side, a very special friend who is like a sistar but so much more, and finally my wonderful husband. Just like Mother’s everywhere celebrating their awesomesauceness.
For me though, this mother’s day and every one since 2008 has been a little sad. I am a Mother quite true, a mother of 7, to be exact!
A birth mother to one, Michael (25)– He taught me no matter what you are never ready for what God has in store and He gives you what you need so you can overcome and do better next time, My experience with my son has made me want o be the best mother I can be and do better than yesterday.
A step-mother to three, Isaiah (26), Christian (21) & Gavanni (11) -They taught me you don’t have to be a birth mother to love someone else’s children like your own, all you can do is love their wounds and hope everything turns out for the best and always be there and if it hurts, remember, It’s not me they are mad at……
And an earth mother to 3 Angel Babies, Divina Angelica 7/12/08, Sebastian Otilio 5/9/12 and Joy Anastacia Montero 1/21/15– They taught me that you can love someone so much and not know them but love the idea and the possibility of what they could become.
I am the mother of SEVEN! By birth, by marriage & and through death… I am a MOTHER of SEVEN!
Anyone who knows me all I want is to mother and nurture you to the point of smotherfuckerness, I know who I am and I love deeply, wildly passionately. I see the best in everyone and want the best for everyone but I have also discerned who far I will get involved. I don’t have time for fake, selfish, thoughtless self-absorbed people. I want people in my life who want to get to know me, who I am and what I love. People judge every moment when they have no business pointing any fingers and then refuse to talk about the elephant in the room. I am bringing this up because loss affects everyone and when people don’t talk things can get miscommunicated and instead of support there is division. In my most recent past I have had experiences of discerning who would stay in my life and who couldn’t be there until they respected my personal boundaries.
The hardest part of that was sticking up for myself, This Mother of Seven!
Right now, though I want to talk about my last 3 babies, the ones that no one acknowledges or thinks about, or even knows about but I think about them, they grew in my belly even if it was for short time, I knew them, I wanted them. I would like to introduce my three children that are with God/dess now and tell their stories.
With Divina Angelica I had a miscarriage, I didn’t know that I was pregnant. I went 19 years without an oopps or an UTOH, I thought I couldn’t have any more babies… Then there I was pregnant and having a miscarriage. No way to stop it, just had to let it happen. No one to talk to, because my baby was less than the criteria recognized as be “a baby”, they treated her like nothing but she was my baby and I was devastated and for months years after I couldn’t shake her wondering what she would have been like wondering if she had daddy’s beautiful lips and my eyes and curly hair….
Sebastian Otilio, well I thought I had kidney stones and went to the ER. Upon further investigation, I found that I was pregnant again, Mother’s day week to be exact, only this time I was in so much pain because the pregnancy was ectopic. The difference between miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies is that miscarriages just happen you start bleeding. With an ectopic if you are bleeding you are in a bad way and it is life or death. I had to choose to end my pregnancy with methotrexate so I didn’t have a fallopian rupture and die. So me or my baby, me or my baby, what do you choose? It doesn’t really matter… What matters is that I had to choose. Miscarriage would have been so much easier than choosing to end your baby’s life so you could life. Once again I didn’t know I was pregnant but it was out of my hands. All the while having to act normal, having to act sane, not sad like nothing was wrong, no one knew about my second little miracle and just as quick as I knew of him he was gone.
Joy Anastacia, this time we knew and she was welcome, we were happy and I knew true joy for the first time in my life and that is what her gift to me was. A little dream come true but I knew there was a chance that since my last pregnancy was ectopic, I had a 15% chance of being at risk for another but I just prayed, hoped and wished for a different outcome. I went for my ultrasound, to find out viability and there was healthy living baby with a heartbeat in my fallopian tube, feeling quite nice. So here I am once again, I have to choose me or my baby. Methotrexate wasn’t an option, as I was too far in my pregnancy, so along with a fallopian tube, went my baby. I had asked the surgeon to be as kind as possible during removal so that I could bury my baby and make sure to let who ever needed notifying to do what needed done so I could have her. I didn’t get to mourn my first two. Only my husband, My AMAZING Doula, a few close people knew. It was this secret that we didn’t talk about just suffered in silence, this pain this grief this loss.
I had dreams that I was screaming please look at my baby can’t you see her isn’t she beautiful…. and nobody would look at her. I would just cry and cry. My heart was breaking and no one knew. Facebook is such an amazing social experiment. It really shows you the true nature of people and how they value you as well as others. After this last miscarriage I realized who were really my friends or really cared. The common thread of thoughtful people, they didn’t know I had lost a child but they knew something was wrong by what I posted. I got messages and phone calls of support and kindness “I don’t know what’s going on but if you need me I am here type stuff” and some were so self-absorbed that they didn’t notice, still haven’t called and are wondering why we are no longer “friends” When I care for someone I pay attention and this was a hell like no other and the grief I felt the third time around was beyond anything I can ever explain.
As life never leaves us without guidance, I just happened to be taking a perinatal bereavement course when I underwent surgery and that helped me process this heartbreaking event but also helped come to peace with the first two children that I lost. I was able to honor them and put into perspective so many feelings of guilt, grief and shame. I allowed myself to be heartbroken, to talk about it to tell people but this is the first time that I am sharing my story with the world.
I had so many feelings and I felt so alone. Was I a mother or wasn’t I? People say all kinds of cruel things trying to be helpful. They are in better place, God has his reasons. None of that mattered, I wanted my babies with me and I didn’t have any of them. So learning what my rights were and what I needed to do to honor myself and my family proved invaluable. I am a doula also, so this experience helps me be able to help mothers in unfortunate circumstances and if I can support a woman through one of the most difficult times one can have in their life and help a women process her pain and fell like she isn’t losing her mind heart and soul in one shot it was all worth it. No one would should suffer in silence. So often we wait to tell people we are pregnant because miscarriage is so common. There we are holding our breath, praying for our miracle and when it doesn’t take you are devastated. Then comes the blame what did something I do cause this? What could I have done different.
This was the most eye opening experience as a mother ever experience whether – 7 weeks, 17 weeks, 25 weeks, or 40 weeks, they are our babies, our babies and when we lose a child it is heart wrenching debilitating and life altering. Remember you don’t have to suffer alone – ask for help, talk about your loss and seek support. Thank you for listening.
I AM A MOTHER OF SEVEN!

My Story
People often ask me why or how I became a Holistic Life Cycle Coach. From a young age, I was drawn to beauty, food, health, nature, and science. No one taught me these wonderful things that made me feel and look radiant—I simply knew. What I didn’t know, I read about. However, my pursuit of these passions was put on hold early in life. In 1990, at just 15 years old, I became a mother, completely unprepared for the challenges ahead.
Before my son Michael was born, I managed to get my GED, despite only having an 8th-grade education. I also earned a food service certification from BOCES. People say everything happens for a reason, and I had to learn quickly—there were no excuses. I now understand why my baby was born sickly, though at the time, doctors had no answers, calling it an unspecified respiratory illness. He was treated as an asthmatic, but nothing worked. For the first seven years of his life, Michael remained extremely sick, with worsening episodes. I kept asking questions, but no answers came, and my own health began to decline—mentally, digestively, and reproductively. Misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis left both of us without hope.
By 1997, I was working in a health food store, trying to improve my health and my child’s. One day, an herbalist came in to drop off tinctures, and I bombarded him with questions—could these help my child? How do they work? Could he recommend anything? A few days later, he returned with three bottles and clear instructions. I followed his guidance to the letter, and what happened next was life-changing.
As I learned about food and herbs as medicine and began implementing them into our lives, Michael started improving—in health, spirit, and even his palate! It was nothing short of miraculous. I read everything I could get my hands on about organic living, natural health, food as medicine, and alternative treatments. Three years later, Michael’s health was so much better that he only had episodes when we moved to new states. Now, he only has mild allergies—a far cry from the baby allergic to almost everything: food, trees, plants, animals, grass, and even sand.
My exposure to this new world sparked an insatiable hunger for more knowledge about this holistic way of living, which is really just a return to our Indigenous roots. In 1998, I became an apprentice at a wellness center, gaining experience in massage therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, and skincare. I wanted to be licensed, so in 2000, I decided to attend aesthetics school and became an aesthetician. Since then, I have worked alongside doctors, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, mentors, and coaches in day spas, medispas, wellness centers, and my own private practice.
These experiences taught me so much about people and what motivates them. I realized that everyone wants to live a good life, feel happy and healthy, and look their best—but more than anything, they want to feel good about themselves. Often, people feel overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. I stepped up and deepened my understanding of skin health and its connection to overall well-being, as well as the effects of what we put into and on our bodies.
In 2009, I met a woman who became the catalyst for bringing all my education together. She introduced me to the Biblical Health Institute, where I became a Certified Biblical Health Coach. I knew I wanted to mentor women, but not solely through nutrition. Food has always been my entry point, but my purpose has bloomed beyond it. After years of study, coaching, and working, I am now fulfilling my dream of helping women nourish, empower, and renew themselves from the inside out as a Wholistic Womyn’s Wellness Advocate and Holistic Childbirth/Family Consultant, using the gifts that Mother Nature has provided.
Early motherhood, abuse, life stress, and a family history of mental and physical illness have shown me how important it is for women—at any stage of life, whether maiden, mother, queen, or crone—to maintain good health, master their bodies, and balance the demands of being a modern woman while still nurturing their own needs for growth and self-development.
I am in love with this amazing world. Everything I learned early in life has led me back to my true purpose, which, until a few years ago, wasn’t as clear as I’d hoped. Life is a process, and every step along the way has been perfect because it brought me to where I am now—right where I’m meant to be. Namaste!
My Sacred Vision
I invite women—whether maiden, mother, queen, or crone—to nourish, empower, and care for themselves, preparing their body, mind, and spirit in the best possible way. Using the wise women tradition of thinking and healing, I help women navigate the challenges of aging, bodily changes, mental stress, and the environmental pollution of our ever-changing world.
I support women as they face “Healthy Life” challenges, helping them release lifestyle choices that no longer serve them in order to enhance their overall health, nourishment, well-being, and empowerment. I guide them to embrace their full potential as radiant, discerning beings, using a holistic approach to life. Women will learn to love themselves as they are—healthy, whole, and holy.
By teaching women to nourish, empower, and care for themselves with nature’s gifts—local organic foods, revitalizing handmade skincare, professionally selected energetic treatments, affirmations, aromatherapy, crystals, herbal tinctures, nourishing infusions, and flower essences—I help them feel healthy, whole, and holy from the inside out.
By providing connection, education, resources, and support, I open a community that helps people discover the benefits of holistic living. Together, we nurture ourselves, each other, and our beloved Mother Earth.
My #1 Surefire Health Tip for Saving Money, Time & your Sanity
Greetings & salutations, Mon Ami’s! So glad you are reading my post today!
As I prepare to put my 2014 to rest with the help of a few tools that make life planning easier. I have come to realize as I get older using my time more effectively will result in being less stressed, more organized, and I will have more time to do the activities I love. I also learned that in order to have the life I love I will have to use each moment as fully as I can starting with the minute I open my eyes each day. I am planning for my life on a daily, weekly, monthly & yearly basis. When you plan you can manifest more because your dreams are truly the fuel for your life’s reality.
How will I honor myself today?
How will I give myself the space I need to get my soul work done?
How will I use my resources effectively(time, money, connections, locations) to accomplish my daily tasks and grow my dream to fruition?
Currently, I am sitting with my 2015 calendar and putting into it the activities, teaching, events and excursions that are in my heart for my sojourn on this planet as well as, my soul’s mission.
I want to talk about Sunday. This is the most important day of my week 🙂
This is the day that I rest, nourish, and revitalize my mind, body, and spirit. It sets the tone for the entire week ahead! Sunday is my day to unplug, check in with myself, set my goals and TA-DA’s(my spin on to-dos) for the week, schedule my loving movement(exercise) times, catch up with loved ones, cue up my own personal DJ 😉 and get cooking!
The only “work” I do on Sunday is to prepare my food for the week. I start by getting everything prepped, seasoned and portioned out for the week. My family is blended so we have my stepson form Sunday-Wednesday so I am a BIG fan of Cook Once, Eat Multiple Times. If I am feeling ambitious then I might, cook 3 meal so I really won’t have to cook again until Thursday where I will cook the next 3 meals but all my supplies are already ready and it is a grab & go. Whether its a pre-cooked meal to put in the oven or on the stove to heat up or grab some baggies of portioned out fruits, veggies, protein and cook it, I am ahead of the game exponentially. This method helps me to make sure I have excellent breakfast, lunch, and dinner options helping me TO EAT FOR ENERGY, less cleanup and more quality time with my loved ones.
Today’s Takeaway:
Make it a PRIORITY to learn how to prep your food properly each week. You will not only save time, money, and feel exquisitely productive but you will also stay fit and have more energy.

MY Marvelous “MOON” Day Musings
Ama’ritday Ama’ritday Ama’ritday! This is my song and reminder to my self that all the magic that I am and need – Is inside me already! All I have to do is let it out!
Good Morning DIVINE People of this planet we call Earth! I am blessed as always to have this piece of cyber space to sing my song to you!
So lately in my field of reference is the longing to shine so brightly and be this Healer, World Changer, Ripple Maker, Sacred Space Holder, All the while maintaining a life that may or may not be lighting you up! Being scared to hang that shingle out that says “Master, Expert Awesomesaucer” at work here! Stepping into our power is something that scares the ever loving daylights out of most of us all except for that 7% or so that just naturally kicks ass from they moment that are birthed…
I encourage you all to tell the universe your deepest darkest desire without limitation or lack. Only ABUNDANT THOUGHT SHALL ESCAPE YOUR LIPS! The universe hears you, REMEMBER your words are prayers, every last one! She absolutely conspires to give you greatness on almost every level but when we get what we want, we choke because the next step is to scary or real like whoa this actually for really happening!
For me this is how it went down…
In late November, I took my intermediate and advanced level of Integrated Energy Therapy. At that time, the instructor, whom I had met when I took my IET basic level (we had partnered together to learn during the workshop) made mention that she needed a Personal Assistant. I thought about the PA job but never offered up my services. I was like what can I do for her? She has got it going on… She is where I want to be!!! I did ask though about her work space. Why yes, I do have some days available she says and that was that until the first of June/July 2014. Life goes on and we make contact. I wanted to receive a treatment from her but life has a way of giving you what you need when you need it…. I actually am being on worked by another amazing practitioner, for now, as is the way.. It did however give us the opportunity to get reconnected.
All of a sudden the noise in my head was deafening – Call her, Ask about the space, What do you have to lose(CAW-My Raven Power Totem))… So I did!
and the rest you can find here and I am also doing VA work for her as well….
That space waited for me from November 2013 until now and at a price that is unheard of…. With all the specs that would make a budding health coach DROOL!
So what I am trying to say is- If it is for you, it will be there for you but you must have to FAITH, that you are in your perfection even if it doesn’t feel perfect!
SHINE SO BRIGHT THAT GOD/GODDESS NEEDS SHADES BECAUSE SHE MADE YOU THAT MAGNIFICENT! 🙂

Birth Plan Basics
A birth plan provides thorough communication encouraging all parties involved to assist you in getting the birth you want (or as close to it as you can).
As a pregnant mother you have expectations on how you would like your birth to go but sometimes feel leery to express your wishes for this labor and delivery to your medical professional. Remember your doctor works for you and your birth is just that – your birth. You can decide and design your perfect birth scenario.
You can ask any question that you want, You can birth in a manner that makes you feel amazing and empowered (unless of course there is a medically valid reason why you can’t)
Having an option and direction gives you piece of mind that your wishes will be honored and your baby will be birthed in the manner of your choosing. A birth plan ensures just that!
Giving birth is a natural process but things can come up, so creating your birth plan supports your first decisions as a mother and your needs during labor and delivery.
Helping you achieve your goals for an ideal birthing experience your detailed birth plan will cover:
• Where you will deliver – birth center, hospital, or at home
• Who will attend: Doctor or Midwife?
• What type of meds – Prescribed pharmaceuticals or Herbal Remedies?
• How you will manage pain – Relaxation techniques, Environment/Ambiance or Epidural
• Do you need surgical intervention – Caesarean or Episiotomy?
• Are you – low or high risk?
• Who will support you – Doula, Dad, Significant Other, Family or Friends?
• Is my birth location baby friendly – building infant mother bond, immediate skin to skin contact and breastfeeding, do they allow question following the birth in regards to the baby initial examination?
• What I will need for my Recovery – support dealing with regular post partum delivery issues, post partum delivery issues with interventions.
• What if something goes wrong -Sometimes babies are sick, disabled or even sadder, can die. Having a support team in place is imperative. Knowing your rights to your child in health, sickness and in death are imperative as is the right to grieve and say goodbye.
Having a birth plan ensures that your ideal birth wishes are honored and respected. Sitting down and having a heart to heart talk with your spouse, significant other, family, friends and loved ones and express what is most important to you and how their positive support, encouragement and caring communication throughout your pregnancy can effectively achieve an amazing labor and birthing experience.

Bringing Home & Health Together: Sacred
According to Zelnik Panero, author of Environmental Psychology, “Most applications of human engineering have, in fact, been in the industrial and military sectors. Unfortunately, the more mundane applications, such as those found in the design of the interior spaces within our homes, offices, health facilities, schools, etc., have been relatively ignored. This is particularly ironic since much of the underlying philosophy of human engineering is based on the premise that everything is designed for people. Where else can the concept of “designing from the man, out” make more sense than in the field of architecture and interior design?”
Frank Lloyd Wright knew that the way to a perfect interior design was to bring the outside in. I think maybe with our bodies it is just the opposite; we should bring the inside out. God made the water, trees, sky, and hills all the beauty that surrounds us. God made us fully from our souls to our bodies and if we treat that well and bring it out into the world; we are fulfilling our ultimate purpose.
By designing for the physical, psychological and spiritual needs; increased health, productivity, happiness and general quality of life will be the end result. When designing a home or lifestyle such as this, maintenance, sustainability, comfort and simplicity are the keys. Spirituality, intellectual growth, fitness and socialization are keys to our health and because they are so important, should be built into our environment.
How do we build these things into our environment? There are a few simple things we can do with little cost or extravagant expense depending on how we want to do it.
Sacred space – Someplace to retreat to for prayer and reflection. This can be a corner with a comfortable chair that is quiet and out of the way or a room with a water feature for acoustical privacy, specialized lighting and a comfortable place to sit. A dream space would be an interior spot that brings the exterior in through fenestration and it would include water, soothing colors and a soft place to sit.
Fitness space – We should not have to go to a gym to exercise our bodies. We can create a full out gym with all the bells and whistles or again, all we need is enough room to move our bodies. A dream fitness space would be similar to the sacred space listed above, only with smooth interiors lots of water for drinking and some favorite equipment.
Socialization – A real living room with no television so families are forced to interact and play together. An ideal spot, for a family with small children, would be an area to sit down and work together on projects or schoolwork or play games. This area should be in the middle of the house where everyone walks through to do almost anything.
In a perfect world, every home would have an entire library that encourages intellectual growth. Beautiful books to choose from anytime you have an interest in something special, Internet access to Google anything you wonder about and a huge table and bench to spread it all out on and study. This again could cost a fortune but could be accumulated slowly or it could be a small space with a little bookcase, table and chairs and a library card.
The kitchen is another blog entirely! Regardless of whether you cook warm meals at home or prepare raw masterpieces there are a billion ways to make a kitchen a place for joyful, healthful tasks and interaction!
May you have an amazing week filled with Light Love and Bright Blessings!

Understanding Forgiveness
We talked about life’s balance and how health is much more than just nutrition and exercise. For true health and a balanced life we need to take care of our other needs one is our connection to others. Whether you consider forgiveness spiritual, relationship or self-esteem it is an important part of emotional health and thereby physical as well.
The following is borrowed from a man who has been sending out love to everyone for a long time. His blog is called “The Daily Love” and his name is MastenKipp.
“The joy that comes from realizing that suffering in our lives comes from the meaning we have given it is unlimited.”
I am not saying that painful things in your past didn’t happen, but what I am saying is that they no longer have to be as painful. It’s not as easy as changing your mind once or twice. It takes work, and reps, like in the gym. Though if you try and try enough over time, new life and new meaning can emerge.
One of the best ways I know how to do this is to take ourselves out of our own story and step into the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of the person who hurt us. Not so we can make right what they did, but so we can begin to understand the painful event from their point of view.
As I have guided clients through this process, the outcomes have been amazing. Forgiveness shows up on a whole new level of themselves and other as well as from VERY traumatic events.
The point of forgiveness is not to make right what happened, but to bring a new sense of empathy and compassion to all involved – this includes you.
The best way to get back at people who have hurt us is to forgive them, because that is how we break the bond over the painful event. From there, when we step into their shoes and consider how they must have been thinking and feeling, we begin to understand that their actions were not truly against us, but a request for Love or Significance in a very messed up way; that was the best way that they knew how to at that time.
From a SOUL perspective, we can claim ownership over the meaning we give that event, and no longer make it about how it hurt us, but about how they were hurt and our job is now to step into more Love and compassion and empathy, for them and for us. This takes us deeper and helps to bring clarity, resolution and forgiveness.
The words I am writing in this blog are easy to say and harder to do. It’s not as easy as reading The Daily Love and being done with it. My hope is that this blog can be a beginning point for you to start the journey of forgiveness, of empathy and of compassion, so that one day soon you will be set free of the chains that bind you from the past.
When we see things from the point of view of others, we realize that what they are doing as not against us but as an action to make up for the love they didn’t get. It’s that simple. In this realization, we can transcend the hurt and the pain because we realize it was never about us in the first place, and so the victim story can be replaced with the story of the hero who overcame the darkness in another with Love.”
I love what Mastin says here. I believe that there is unbelievable healing in forgiveness. Forgiving someone can take years of burden off your shoulders not to mention your soul. It restores relationships, enables new beginnings and allows us to move on to better things.
How can you start practicing forgiveness right now? I’d love to hear you share with me in the comments below.

- Exercise (a minimum of 30 minutes 6 days a week)
- Gratitude (take the time to be grateful for at least 3 things in your life daily)
- Giving (challenge yourself to give without expectation of reciprocation once daily)
Nutrition
Don’t be hard on yourself this holiday season. Our goal is to simply add in one healthy whole food each week. Enjoy your holiday traditions and don’t eat beyond what feels good to you.
Exercise
Resolve to get at least 30 minutes of good healthy exercise in each day (with one day of rest). You will feel better through the holidays. Exercise is good for depression, weight maintenance and your general health.
Gratitude
List 3 things that you are grateful for each day. By focusing on gratitude, we see our lives from a different perspective. Instead of seeing what is going wrong, we see the more important picture of what is right in our lives.
Giving
You don’t have to brag about your giving, but if someone gives and it turns out to be really special, share it with us. You may also want to include it as a part of your goal. In prior years, my goal was to give without cost; it does not have to be an expensive gift, just thoughtful and meaningful.
Do you know anyone who is struggling through the holidays? Invite them along!
This weekend I will work on my own goals and post them here.

I am Back…
After what seems to be a very long time!
A lot has changed but I am more focused about where I want to go in life. With that came the decision to really incorporate my Young Living Essential Oils into my business. For the most part, I have used these oils personally and for my family but I really need to share what I have learned with the world. I am very excited about what this opportunity means for my future .
I will be able to do what I love & work with a company that shares the same concerns about our families the environment & our planet. I plan on writing something weekly even if its just a blurb.
It will be skin, health, natural, organic, cosmetic or food related as there is lots to share.
Thanks for reading!

Deciphering Organic, Part 1 | SkinInc.com
People desire a healthy environment rather than one that they need to be protected from, and because of this, there is a belief that beauty products featuring the words “natural” or “organic” are the best choices. Because of this, companies use these words as powerful, persuasive marketing tools to help sell their products. Until now, this marketing has been effective due to the lack of guidelines and enforcements—but things are changing.
The governments of the United States and Canada have defined the term organic as plant material that has been grown and harvested according to strict agricultural standards. Organic featured on a cosmetic or skin care label implies that a certain level of organic plant content is present in that product. However, the word natural has no strict regulatory definition, so it is widely used in a variety of industries, misleading consumers and making them think the products are safer than those without the natural reference. As the public becomes more attuned to the facts, a tremendous amount of pressure is placed on ingredient manufacturers and skin care formulators, because the more clearly defined organic status is very difficult—and expensive—to achieve.
Clearing up confusion
The big question is: Do spa professionals truly get what they want and expect when they purchase a skin care line that has been marketed as natural or organic?
Leslie Lyon, a spa consultant, has interviewed Marilyn Patterson, a cosmetic chemist and consultant for the development of natural and organic cosmetics, to help explain the safety and effectiveness of natural and organic ingredients.
Lyon: Many manufacturers make claims that their products are green, natural or organic, but who looks out for the spa professionals as they attempt to make safe choices?
Patterson: In Canada and the United States, the cosmetic industry is self-regulating, with guidelines provided by the governments. If a product has complaints against it, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States and Health Canada in Canada will intervene, look into the complaints and only then will an unsafe product be removed from the market. Although manufacturers do test their products for safety before putting them on the market, cosmetics and skin care products are under the category of buyer beware. Like food, consumers must learn what is good for them and make their own choices.
Out of the three words—organic, green and natural—organic is the only one that is government regulated. There are many cosmetic and skin care lines with the word in product or company names, which can be misleading to consumers. A lawsuit by a leading organic soap company has been filed against many companies that are currently using the word organic as a marketing strategy. But the lawsuit has been taken one step further to try and eliminate any competition by also suing two certifying bodies: Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards (OASIS) and ECOCERT. These two organizations do not agree with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) strict definition for organic when it is applied to cosmetics and skin care products. There currently is not a USDA regulation for cosmetics, only for food. The cosmetics industry has been guided by the food definition for awhile, which is why OASIS set out to develop guidelines specifically for cosmetics. There are differences between how foods, and cosmetics and skin care products are processed, which is why OASIS and ECOCERT disagree with the USDA.
Lyon: How do you define green?
Patterson: There is no global definition for green as it pertains to cosmetics and skin care product regulation, although it is often assumed that a green product adheres a variety of eco-friendly philosophies. The Canadian government started a certification body in 1988 called EcoLogo to define green, although it has become a much broader concept in the minds of spa professionals and their clients.
Lyon: What is greenwashing?
Patterson: Using green words, such as organic, natural, vitamins or botanicals, when they are present in concentrations too low to have any effect is a form of greenwashing. Another form is when the green ingredients are used with other questionable ingredients.
In regard to ingredients, if the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), a U.S.-based organization that reviews and assesses the safety of cosmetic ingredients, has found a material to be safe at the levels used in cosmetics, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) consider them safe at the levels used. You can review specific ingredients and their CIR findings at www.cir-safety.org/findings.shtml.
Lyon: What is the purpose of organic ingredient lists?
Patterson: Each organic- and natural-certifying organization has its own list of allowed and banned ingredients. They can be difficult to access, but you can find out more about cosmetic ingredients from the certification organizations. It is a tedious process to go through the ingredient listings on a product label and compare them to those on the positive and negative lists, but this is the only way to ensure that the products you are interested in are truly natural, if they do not feature a reputable certification logo. The other option would be to hire a consultant to help you through this process.
Lyon: Can an ingredient be referred to by more than one name? This can often confuse the consumer.
Patterson: There is only one International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI) name assigned by the PCPC for a cosmetic ingredient that can be used on a product label, but not all companies follow the labeling regulations. In the United States, the regulation control is lax compared to Europe, where companies that mislabel cosmetics are frequently fined by enforcement organizations operated on a country-to-country basis. Some companies put the source of the ingredient in brackets after the INCI name, and this can be misleading and often is inaccurate. An example would be “sodium laureth sulfosuccinate (coconut).” This is also improper INCI labeling, for it to be proper, the information in the parentheses would have to be removed.
Lyon: Are there laws regarding product label claims?
Patterson: The FDA, FTC and Health Canada do have strict labeling requirements concerning claims, ingredient labeling, letter size and more, but the policing of these is minimal.
Lyon: What’s all the fuss about parabens? What are they and why are they so taboo?
Patterson: Parabens are a group of molecules that act as preservatives in cosmetic and skin care products. They have been grouped together by the media, but each type of paraben has different properties regarding solubility and shape/binding properties. Some forms can exist in nature; for example, blueberries contain natural parabens. Parabens hit the news when a study was released that found parabens in breast tumor tissue. The extrapolation was made that the parabens must have migrated into breast tissue from underarm deodorant or antiperspirants, and that they had a causal effect on the tumor formation. The study was small and not definitive, so there has been much controversy about it. Some parabens are very weakly binding to estrogen-binding sites in tissue. The worry is that they will exert an effect on breast tumor cells or any other estrogen-sensitive tissue to increase tumor growth. It could be that in the future, there may or may not be a scientific basis for this health scare. The data is not clear at the present time.
Much of the marketing of natural products is based on what they do not contain, although this practice is often frowned upon since it gives the impression that the materials are bad, stirring up hype and often giving a negative impression about safe materials. “Paraben-free” is one example. People have recognized that preservatives, fragrance and color ingredients have the highest potential for allergenicity, so marketing professionals target these types of ingredients, as well.
Lyon: What is biodynamic farming, and what is the difference between it and organic farming?
Patterson: Organic farming is concerned with the chemicals that are used to help grow crops, prepare fields and control pests. Only natural and environmentally safe chemicals can be used, and composted material plays a large factor in the preparation of the field. Biodynamic agriculture considers the farm to be a self-contained entity. There is a strong correlation between the crops, livestock, careful maintenance of the soil and recycling of nutrients in order to maintain an ongoing, pristine quality compost and astronomical sowing and planting calendar based on the phases of the moon.
Lyon: How do you decide if an ingredient can be used in a natural or organic skin care product?
Patterson: The guidelines for accreditation of ingredients for natural and organic cosmetic products or skin care lines are similar for all certifying bodies, with some variation on the percentage of organic content and allowed preservatives. To be used in a natural or organic cosmetic or skin care product, an ingredient often must comply with the following.
Renewable. Most plant material is renewable. Plants grown organically are preferred for environmental and safety reasons. Minerals may also be acceptable if they do not contain harmful contaminants, such as heavy metals. Petroleum, although natural, is usually changed in form when it is used in manufacturing, and it is not renewable. Animal products are allowed if no harm is done to the animal. There are some exceptions, such as carmine, red colorant that is derived from crushed insects, and chitin/chitosan that is derived from shrimp shells. It is important to note that in the European Union (EU), ingredients tested on animals are not allowed.
Safety. Safety testing is currently done on animals in some cases, but there is a huge effort in research and development to replace animal testing with alternatives. The safety testing of some materials is currently performed on animals when an alternative hasn’t been validated to find out how that material impacts an organism systemically. In many cases, these animal tests are required by the FDA because you can’t test on humans. A botanical oil or extract often has a long history of use, so it is deemed safe. If there is a chance of harmful impurities being present in an ingredient, than the ingredient is not allowed.
Synthetics. Synthetics are not allowed because most use petroleum-based starting molecules.
Biodegradability. Silicones do not biodegrade, so they are not allowed, and there are many surfactants and preservatives that are not allowed because they do not biodegrade quickly.
Processing. Many of the guidelines deal with harmful impurities that could be present during processing. A botanical oil that has been extracted with a petroleum solvent, such as hexane, is not allowed because some hexane could remain in the oil, while the same botanical oil that is cold-pressed is allowed. An example would be extra virgin olive oil, which is always cold-pressed, as opposed to a cheaper grade of olive oil that would probably have been solvent extracted. Many ingredients that start out with plant material are still not allowed because the process that they undergo creates toxic or carcinogenic side products, or the ingredient that it is reacted with is toxic or carcinogenic and will remain as a contaminant in the ingredient. North American governments do regulate the amount of toxic or carcinogenic impurities that are allowed to remain in an ingredient.
Meet your clients’ needs
For spa professionals to offer their clients the natural, organic or green cosmetic products that are being demanded, they must ensure that the these products have undergone a thorough evaluation in order to be certain that they will truly meet the needs of their clients. If there is a valid certification logo, the rest of the promotion and advertising budget can be devoted to a product’s unique features. In the very near future, you may need to explain to your clients why one product line without certification is better than one with certification, and your credibility will depend upon this. More information about how to determine this will be provided in Part 2 of this article, which will be published in the March 2010 issue of Skin Inc. magazine.

Deciphering Organic, Part 2 | SkinInc.com
In Part 1 of this article, which ran in the February 2010 issue of Skin Inc. magazine, common questions about green, natural and organic product claims were addressed. Now, the path is cleared for deciding which degree of organic is suitable to you as a spa professional. The Five Degrees to Organic is an unofficial scale created by Marilyn Patterson, and as it approaches the fifth degree, ingredients begin to better meet established regulations and move from the designation of natural/organic to certified organic.
You must first figure out your own organic standards and determine the ingredients that you deem to be important as organic and those you consider to be safe enough with or without organic certification. This is acquired knowledge, and is the personal preference of each individual. Understanding these degrees will help to better equip spa professionals to make natural and organic product choices.
Degree #1: Natural or organic ingredients used for marketing only
An ingredient that delivers efficacy is rarely inexpensive. Companies selling low- to mid-priced cosmetics may prefer to spend their money on marketing rather than on expensive ingredients. Marketing claims must follow government guidelines, which differentiate between cosmetic and drug claims, but a lot of puffery is allowed. Therefore, it sometimes can be difficult for the professional to identify the truth in the advertising. A quick look at the ingredient list will give an educated professional an idea of where a product stands. If the natural or organic ingredient that is being marketed is near the bottom of the ingredient listing, than it may not be used at an efficacious level.
Degree #2: Natural or organic ingredients used for efficacy in a non-natural base
There are many natural and organic ingredients that have proven efficacy and have been found to be safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Health Canada, but are in a product with accompanying ingredients that do not fit the guidelines for natural and organic ingredients. Often, a botanical, or plant-based, active is chosen instead of a synthetic active because the product can then be described as natural in marketing claims. Spa professionals need to evaluate the ingredients listed on the label before making a decision. The natural or organic ingredient will have a Latin botanical name, and you would expect it to appear before the middle of the ingredient list. But at this degree, any other ingredient names will not fit the definition for acceptable natural or organic ingredients. The marketing information that goes with these products will mention efficacy studies if they have them. If not, you cannot be sure of the effect of the botanical, or if it is even used in an efficacious concentration.
Degree #3: Natural or organic ingredients, but the product is not certified
In North America, there is still some debate about which certification body is the most credible. As a result, many companies are following the European guidelines for ingredient choices, but are not going through the certification process. At this degree, all ingredients on the label should follow the guidelines for natural supporting and organic ingredients. The third degree is usually acceptable, but it can be difficult to assess which products fall into this category. Even if a botanical ingredient is used, it may have been extracted with a petroleum-based nonrenewable solvent, and the solvent will not be listed on the label. But it is in this third degree that you are most likely to find efficacious products at more reasonable prices.
Degree #4: Certified natural or organic
This category is where the debate begins. Many certifying bodies are stating that products are organic according to their regulations, but the percentage of organic botanicals required is below the 95% organic content line. These should be considered natural rather than organic. If a product is certified natural or organic, it will have a logo denoting this. A certified natural or organic cosmetic or skin care line must use ingredients that follow strict rules for safety and environmental protection. The main difference between Degree #3and Degree #4 is that a certified natural product must use certified organic botanicals when possible, and nonorganic botanicals must be 5% or less of the botanical content to qualify at Degree #4. The problem with noncertified organic botanicals is that pesticides or other harmful impurities may be present because the plants may not have been grown organically. Many efficacious botanical actives are excluded because they are not certified organic, and there are few organic actives available at this time. There is no way to tell if the botanical listed on the label has been grown without pesticides or herbicides unless the cosmetic has undergone a certification process.
In Europe, the Cosmetic Organic Standard (COSMOS) was one of the first European harmonized standards for organic personal care products. Many countries in Europe have individually developed standards for natural or organic cosmetic products, and in an effort to standardize these regulations, six of the European organic personal care regulatory bodies have formed COSMOS.
COSMOS requires 95% of agricultural ingredients to be organic and 20% of total product by weight, including water, to be organic. It does allow a maximum of 5% synthetic content. But this organization is still under development and will not have products certified under it for another year or two. The six founding member companies—BDIH from Germany, BIOFORUM from Belgium, COSMEBIO and ECOCERT from France, ICEA from Italy, and the Soil Association from the United Kingdom—still certify under their own logos and standards.
These certifying bodies have been classified as natural or organic rather than certified organic because the percentage of organic ingredients required is not as high as the food organic standard.
This statement should be qualified because the calculations for Degree #4 certifying bodies include water, while the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) calculations exclude water. This difference means that the organic percentage of a product that has been certified by Degree #4 cannot be directly compared by a certifying body to a USDA-certified product. It is possible to make an efficacious cosmetic product in this category without the added expense of certification. This degree is a good choice for spa professionals because the work of verifying organic ingredients has already been completed. However, it is still important to contact the certifying body to ensure that this product is using the logo legally.
Degree #5: Certified organic
In the United States and Canada, this is the strictest certification of organic and until recently, only pertained to food. The following list is not exhaustive.
1. USDA Organic. In the United States, the most recognizable logo is USDA Organic. It is the strictest of organic standards because it really is a food standard, requiring at least 95% organic content in order to use the logo. It disallows synthetic preservatives and most chemical ingredient processing. There are four categories of organic under the USDA.
100% organic. Excluding water and salt, the product must contain only organically produced ingredients. Products may display the USDA organic seal, as well as the certifying agent’s name and address.
Organic. The product must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients, excluding water and salt. Remaining product ingredients must consist of nonagricultural substances that are approved on the NOP list, or nonorganically produced agricultural products, not commercially available in organic form, also on the NOP list. Products may display the USDA organic seal and must display the certifying agent’s name and address.
Made with organic ingredients. Products contain at least 70% organic ingredients, and the product label can list up to three of the organic ingredients or “food” groups on the principal display panel. For example, body lotion made with at least 70% organic ingredients, excluding water and salt, and only organic herbs may be labeled either “body lotion made with organic lavender, rosemary and chamomile” or “body lotion made with organic herbs.” Products may not display the USDA organic seal and must display the certifying agent’s name and address.
Less than 70% organic ingredients. Products cannot use the term “organic” anywhere on the principal display panel. However, they may identify the specific ingredients, excluding water and salt, that are USDA-certified as being organically produced on the ingredients statement on the information panel. Products may not display the USDA organic seal and may not display a certifying agent’s name and address.
2. NSF. The National Science Foundation (NSF) provides one of the first U.S. organic standards to emerge after the USDA for cosmetic manufacturers. NSF requires a minimum of 70% of all ingredients, excluding water, to be organic in order to use its “Made With Organic” claim. NSF allows a broader array of preservatives and chemical processes than the USDA. Because this organization only started certifying cosmetics in 2009, there are few available products on the market under this certification at this time.
3. OASIS. OASIS is an industry association formed to certify personal care products specifically, in order to separate cosmetic standards from food standards. It requires 85% of all agricultural ingredients to be organic and allows a broader array of preservatives than the USDA. Because this organization started in 2008, there are few cosmetic products currently on the market that have this certification. There are two levels available: “Organic” features the OASIS logo and “Made with Organic” requires 70% organic ingredient content and does not present the logo. OASIS plans on increasing the required organic content as the industry develops more organic ingredients.
Degree #5 includes the most organic ingredients, but ingredient limitations make it difficult to formulate elegant and effective creams, or mild, pH-friendly cleansers. Oil serums and balms, including lip balms and hydrosol sprays, will be the most common kinds of products that carry these logos.
Become familiar
Spa professionals have many choices to make when deciding on a product line. Because cosmetic product and ingredient certifications and regulations are not unified, the process can become more confusing the deeper you delve into it. However, as a decision-maker, it will help if you consider the following points carefully.
* The ingredient listing on labels is very important; familiarize yourself with all of the details and accompanying claims.
* Seek out the designated ingredient expert at the cosmetic companies you are researching in order to compare your findings and learn even more.
* Confirm that there is a valid certification logo when the word “organic” is used to describe a product.
* If a product has a logo, find out about the certifying body that provides that logo and make sure it agrees with your own philosophy, and that it is indeed from a reputable source. Many companies create their own logos, that have no certifying bodies behind them.
* Look for valid proof of a product’s promise of efficacy.
By keeping your client’s needs in mind and your organic philosophy at heart, this scale may help you make the decision that is right for your business.
