Birth Doula

Would you like to know more about what a doula does?

Do you live in the Mid-Hudson Valley?

Let’s talk TODAY!

Ted Talks On Conception Pregnancy & Birth

Benefits of using a Birth Support Doula
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

Recent evidence also suggests that when a doula provides labor support, women are more satisfied with their experience and the mother-infant interaction is enhanced as long as two months after the birth.

With doula support, partners tend to stay more involved rather than pull away in times of stress.

Statistics have proven the assistance of a birth doula:
An analysis of 12 clinical studies* on the effects of uninterrupted labor support, such as a doula provides, identified the following improvements over births that lacked continuous support:

51% reduction in cesarean births;

25% reduction in labor length (average of 98 minutes);

35% reduction in analgesia;

71% reduction in oxytocin augmentation; and

57% reduction in use of forceps/vacuum.

Continuous labor support benefits mother and baby.

Mothers who have birthed in the presence of a doula report: greater satisfaction with childbirth; more positive assessments of their babies; less postpartum depression; and increased self-esteem. Their babies have shorter hospital stays; are less likely to be admitted to special-care nurseries; breastfeed more easily; and receive more affection from their mothers postpartum

Placenta Encapsulation FAQ

When you are trying to decided which services you want to invest in, you may find that you have MANY questions.
Selecting birth or postpartum services involves confidence and trust in the company you use.

You will find the solutions to many of your questions below.

WHAT IS PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?
First, we examine your placenta and wash off any residual blood.

Depending on your preparation preference, the placenta is either very thinly sliced, or gently steamed and then thinly sliced.
These slices go into a food grade dehydrator until the internal temperature reaches 160° F for about 8-10 hours.
It is then ground up into a fine powder and put into capsule form using an encapsulating device.

Your capsules are packaged in dark glass or PET plastic jars to protect the quality and potency.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW METHOD AND BASIC HEATED?
The raw foods method of preparation skips the heating process before dehydration.

Your placenta is only washed and sliced. This gives you more potent capsules and a higher yield.
The heated method gently warms the placenta. The placenta is sliced and dehydrated.
Basic Heated method aligns with the belief that the postpartum body needs warmth to adequately heal from birth, replenish and move fluids and remove obstructions.
Both have incredible benefits!

CAN I ENCAPSULATE MY PLACENTA IF I HAVE A C-SECTION?

Absolutely!
Just make sure you let your care provider and hospital know that you plan to take your placenta home with you.
They will place it in a small, plastic container labeled with your information.

HOW DO I STORE MY PLACENTA UNTIL IT CAN BE PREPARED?

At your prenatal visit your encapsulator will give you a small styrofoam cooler with a utility grade thermometer inside.
Bring this with you when you give birth.
Your placenta container can be placed inside the cooler surrounded by ice.
Stick the thermometer in the ice next to the container and ensure it stays between 30-40° F until it can transported to your home and prepared.
You can obtain ice from the staff where you birth.

HOW DO I KNOW MY PLACENTA IS BEING PREPARED CORRECTLY?

Sacred Connections Health & Life Arts is run by someone who was trained by an internationally known & respected placenta specialist.
Maritday is very familiar with following food handling safety.
OSHA protocol for working with blood borne pathogens are always followed.
Preparation in your home ensures that you are receiving your OWN placenta.

There is never a risk of mix up or cross contamination.

WHAT IS A PLACENTA TINCTURE?
Placenta tincture is a piece of raw or powdered placenta that is infused in high proof alcohol.

The alcohol draws all of the nutrients and hormonal compounds from the placenta.

This extraction process creates a powerful tincture that is preserved for longer periods of time.

“Except from Mountain Rose Herbs
Also known as- Sambucus spp (Nigra for berries and Canadensis for flowers) American Elder, Common Elder, Black Elder, Bour Tree, and European Black Elder.
Introduction- European elder is a plant native to Europe, Northern Africa, and Western-and Central Asia. Its flowers and berries have a long history of use in traditional European medicine. Elder berries have also been used for making preserves, wines, winter cordials, and for adding flavor and color to other wines.
Constituents- Potassium nitrate, sambucin, sambunigrin, sugars. The complex sugars of the berries are the immune-active fraction.
Parts Used- Most commonly the flowers or berries. Dried fruits are less bitter than fresh.
The branches and leaves are poisonous. The small stem which is sometimes left on the berry is safe.
Typical Preparations- Teas, tinctures, encapsulations, syrups, wine, cordials, and even ketchup, often combined with propolis or echinacea.
Precautions- None for flowers. According to the Botanical Safety Handbook*, the unripe and raw fruit, seeds, bark and leaves contain a component, sambunigrin, which may cause vomiting or severe diarrhea if ingested.

Just a few words on the alternative (Tamiflu)…
Back in 2008, the FDA started reviewing reports of abnormal behavior and disturbing brain effects in more than 1,800 children who had taken Tamiflu. The symptoms included convulsions, delirium and delusions. In Japan, five deaths were reported in children under 16 as a result of such neurological or psychiatric problems. Seven adult deaths have also been attributed to Tamiflu, due to its neuropsychiatric effect. According to a 2009 study, more than half of children taking Tamiflu experience side effects such as nausea and nightmares. Other more rare and bizarre side effects have also been reported, such as the case of a 19-year old British girl who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis and blindness after taking Tamiflu last year.” (Mercola.com)

My Story

People often ask me why or how I became a Holistic Life Cycle Coach. From a young age, I was drawn to beauty, food, health, nature, and science. No one taught me these wonderful things that made me feel and look radiant—I simply knew. What I didn’t know, I read about. However, my pursuit of these passions was put on hold early in life. In 1990, at just 15 years old, I became a mother, completely unprepared for the challenges ahead.

Before my son Michael was born, I managed to get my GED, despite only having an 8th-grade education. I also earned a food service certification from BOCES. People say everything happens for a reason, and I had to learn quickly—there were no excuses. I now understand why my baby was born sickly, though at the time, doctors had no answers, calling it an unspecified respiratory illness. He was treated as an asthmatic, but nothing worked. For the first seven years of his life, Michael remained extremely sick, with worsening episodes. I kept asking questions, but no answers came, and my own health began to decline—mentally, digestively, and reproductively. Misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis left both of us without hope.

By 1997, I was working in a health food store, trying to improve my health and my child’s. One day, an herbalist came in to drop off tinctures, and I bombarded him with questions—could these help my child? How do they work? Could he recommend anything? A few days later, he returned with three bottles and clear instructions. I followed his guidance to the letter, and what happened next was life-changing.

As I learned about food and herbs as medicine and began implementing them into our lives, Michael started improving—in health, spirit, and even his palate! It was nothing short of miraculous. I read everything I could get my hands on about organic living, natural health, food as medicine, and alternative treatments. Three years later, Michael’s health was so much better that he only had episodes when we moved to new states. Now, he only has mild allergies—a far cry from the baby allergic to almost everything: food, trees, plants, animals, grass, and even sand.

My exposure to this new world sparked an insatiable hunger for more knowledge about this holistic way of living, which is really just a return to our Indigenous roots. In 1998, I became an apprentice at a wellness center, gaining experience in massage therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, and skincare. I wanted to be licensed, so in 2000, I decided to attend aesthetics school and became an aesthetician. Since then, I have worked alongside doctors, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, mentors, and coaches in day spas, medispas, wellness centers, and my own private practice.

These experiences taught me so much about people and what motivates them. I realized that everyone wants to live a good life, feel happy and healthy, and look their best—but more than anything, they want to feel good about themselves. Often, people feel overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. I stepped up and deepened my understanding of skin health and its connection to overall well-being, as well as the effects of what we put into and on our bodies.

In 2009, I met a woman who became the catalyst for bringing all my education together. She introduced me to the Biblical Health Institute, where I became a Certified Biblical Health Coach. I knew I wanted to mentor women, but not solely through nutrition. Food has always been my entry point, but my purpose has bloomed beyond it. After years of study, coaching, and working, I am now fulfilling my dream of helping women nourish, empower, and renew themselves from the inside out as a Wholistic Womyn’s Wellness Advocate and Holistic Childbirth/Family Consultant, using the gifts that Mother Nature has provided.

Early motherhood, abuse, life stress, and a family history of mental and physical illness have shown me how important it is for women—at any stage of life, whether maiden, mother, queen, or crone—to maintain good health, master their bodies, and balance the demands of being a modern woman while still nurturing their own needs for growth and self-development.

I am in love with this amazing world. Everything I learned early in life has led me back to my true purpose, which, until a few years ago, wasn’t as clear as I’d hoped. Life is a process, and every step along the way has been perfect because it brought me to where I am now—right where I’m meant to be. Namaste!

My Sacred Vision

I invite women—whether maiden, mother, queen, or crone—to nourish, empower, and care for themselves, preparing their body, mind, and spirit in the best possible way. Using the wise women tradition of thinking and healing, I help women navigate the challenges of aging, bodily changes, mental stress, and the environmental pollution of our ever-changing world.

I support women as they face “Healthy Life” challenges, helping them release lifestyle choices that no longer serve them in order to enhance their overall health, nourishment, well-being, and empowerment. I guide them to embrace their full potential as radiant, discerning beings, using a holistic approach to life. Women will learn to love themselves as they are—healthy, whole, and holy.

By teaching women to nourish, empower, and care for themselves with nature’s gifts—local organic foods, revitalizing handmade skincare, professionally selected energetic treatments, affirmations, aromatherapy, crystals, herbal tinctures, nourishing infusions, and flower essences—I help them feel healthy, whole, and holy from the inside out.

By providing connection, education, resources, and support, I open a community that helps people discover the benefits of holistic living. Together, we nurture ourselves, each other, and our beloved Mother Earth.

I encourage you all to tell the universe your deepest darkest desire without limitation or lack. Only ABUNDANT THOUGHT SHALL ESCAPE YOUR LIPS! The universe hears you, REMEMBER your words are prayers, every last one! She absolutely conspires to give you greatness on almost every level but when we get what we want, we choke because the next step is to scary or real like whoa this actually for really happening!

For me this is how it went down…
In late November, I took my intermediate and advanced level of Integrated Energy Therapy. At that time, the instructor, whom I had met when I took my IET basic level (we had partnered together to learn during the workshop) made mention that she needed a Personal Assistant. I thought about the PA job but never offered up my services. I was like what can I do for her? She has got it going on… She is where I want to be!!! I did ask though about her work space. Why yes, I do have some days available she says and that was that until the first of June/July 2014. Life goes on and we make contact. I wanted to receive a treatment from her but life has a way of giving you what you need when you need it…. I actually am being on worked by another amazing practitioner, for now,  as is the way.. It did however give us the opportunity to get reconnected.

All of a sudden the noise in my head was deafening – Call her, Ask about the space, What do you have to lose(CAW-My Raven Power Totem))… So I did!
and the rest you can find here and I am also doing VA work for her as well….

That space waited for me from November 2013 until now and at a price that is unheard of…. With all the specs that would make a budding health coach DROOL!

So what I am trying to say is- If it is for you, it will be there for you but you must have to FAITH, that you are in your perfection even if it doesn’t feel perfect!
SHINE SO BRIGHT THAT GOD/GODDESS NEEDS SHADES BECAUSE SHE MADE YOU THAT MAGNIFICENT! 🙂

Being able to Understand & Cope With Feelings

Good morning world!  Today is a brand new chance to make a difference!

zen-chasing-worldWhat is something that we all have, often don’t acknowledge and probably don’t fully understand?

The answer is feelings(I bet the giant hint above helped you with this answer!)

Almost all of us know when we have been cut, burned or scratched.  Physical feelings are pretty easy for all of us to ascertain.  It is emotional feelings that seem to baffle us the most.  We need to communicate our feelings and the fact that we don’t understand them makes it pretty difficult.  This leads to many of our communication problems; how can we eloquently communicate something we just don’t get?

Feelings are something that you are aware of through the mind or through the senses that is not connected with sight, hearing, taste, or smell.

Sometimes we try to stop feeling when it is uncomfortable.  This can make us really tired and further confused.  Feelings need to be acknowledged, sometimes spoken and released. The Feeling Wheel (above) sits in black and white on my bookcase. It is folded and tattered from lots of sharing, reading, transporting and love.  It helps us identify the layers of underlying feelings.  I was glad to find a prettier version of it on the internet.  I know it is from a book, but mine was just a copy with holes for a binder.  If anyone reading this knows of its origin, I would love to know!  This wheel is used by a lot of counselors because understanding our feelings leads to an even greater emotional health.

Once we understand a feeling, we can get to the next step to either create and enjoy the feeling, communicate it better, change the value that influenced it or to move on and change the situation to eliminate the cause of the bad feelings. This wheel is similar to a color wheel!  It shows the opposite feeling opposite ends of the wheel.  For example gratitude is a peaceful feeling and peaceful feelings are the opposite of scared.   This wheel is a great tool to use to get in touch with your true emotions!

Today, I am feeling thankful, cheerful, and intelligent and truthfully a teeny bit scared that I am not going to get all my work done!  I am also feeling loved and loving which gives me mostly peaceful emotions.  Maybe if I get all my work done I will feel powerful too!

Bringing Home & Health Together: Sacred

According to Zelnik Panero, author of Environmental Psychology, “Most applications of human engineering have, in fact, been in the industrial and military sectors.  Unfortunately, the more mundane applications, such as those found in the design of the interior spaces within our homes, offices, health facilities, schools, etc., have been relatively ignored.  This is particularly ironic since much of the underlying philosophy of human engineering is based on the premise that everything is designed for people.  Where else can the concept of “designing from the man, out” make more sense than in the field of architecture and interior design?”

Frank Lloyd Wright knew that the way to a perfect interior design was to bring the outside in.  I think maybe with our bodies it is just the opposite; we should bring the inside out.  God made the water, trees, sky, and hills all the beauty that surrounds us.  God made us fully from our souls to our bodies and if we treat that well and bring it out into the world; we are fulfilling our ultimate purpose.

By designing for the physical, psychological and spiritual needs; increased health, productivity, happiness and general quality of life will be the end result.   When designing a home or lifestyle such as this, maintenance, sustainability, comfort and simplicity are the keys.  Spirituality, intellectual growth, fitness and socialization are keys to our health and because they are so important, should be built into our environment.

How do we build these things into our environment?  There are a few simple things we can do with little cost or extravagant expense depending on how we want to do it.

Sacred space – Someplace to retreat to for prayer and reflection.  This can be a corner with a comfortable chair that is quiet and out of the way or a room with a water feature for acoustical privacy, specialized lighting and a comfortable place to sit.  A dream space would be an interior spot that brings the exterior in through fenestration and it would include water, soothing colors and a soft place to sit.

Fitness space – We should not have to go to a gym to exercise our bodies.  We can create a full out gym with all the bells and whistles or again, all we need is enough room to move our bodies.   A dream fitness space would be similar to the sacred space listed above, only with smooth interiors lots of water for drinking and some favorite equipment.

Socialization – A real living room with no television so families are forced to interact and play together.  An ideal spot, for a family with small children, would be an area to sit down and work together on projects or schoolwork or play games.  This area should be in the middle of the house where everyone walks through to do almost anything.

In a perfect world, every home would have an entire library that encourages intellectual growth.  Beautiful books to choose from anytime you have an interest in something special, Internet access to Google anything you wonder about and a huge table and bench to spread it all out on and study.   This again could cost a fortune but could be accumulated slowly or it could be a small space with a little bookcase, table and chairs and a library card.

The kitchen is another blog entirely! Regardless of whether you cook warm meals at home or prepare raw masterpieces there are a billion ways to make a kitchen a place for joyful, healthful tasks and interaction!

May you have an amazing week filled with Light Love and Bright Blessings!

Understanding Forgiveness

We talked about life’s balance and how health is much more than just nutrition and exercise.  For true health and a balanced life we need to take care of our other needs one is our connection to others.  Whether you consider forgiveness spiritual, relationship or self-esteem it is an important part of emotional health and thereby physical as well.

rumi lady heartThe following is borrowed from a man who has been sending out love to everyone for a long time.  His blog is called “The Daily Love” and his name is MastenKipp.

“The joy that comes from realizing that suffering in our lives comes from the meaning we have given it is unlimited.”

I am not saying that painful things in your past didn’t happen, but what I am saying is that they no longer have to be as painful. It’s not as easy as changing your mind once or twice. It takes work, and reps, like in the gym. Though if you try and try enough over time, new life and new meaning can emerge.

One of the best ways I know how to do this is to take ourselves out of our own story and step into the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of the person who hurt us. Not so we can make right what they did, but so we can begin to understand the painful event from their point of view.

As I have guided clients through this process, the outcomes have been amazing. Forgiveness shows up on a whole new level of themselves and other as well as from VERY traumatic events.

The point of forgiveness is not to make right what happened, but to bring a new sense of empathy and compassion to all involved – this includes you.

The best way to get back at people who have hurt us is to forgive them, because that is how we break the bond over the painful event. From there, when we step into their shoes and consider how they must have been thinking and feeling, we begin to understand that their actions were not truly against us, but a request for Love or Significance in a very messed up way; that was the best way that they knew how to at that time.

From a SOUL perspective, we can claim ownership over the meaning we give that event, and no longer make it about how it hurt us, but about how they were hurt and our job is now to step into more Love and compassion and empathy, for them and for us. This takes us deeper and helps to bring clarity, resolution and forgiveness.

The words I am writing in this blog are easy to say and harder to do. It’s not as easy as reading The Daily Love and being done with it. My hope is that this blog can be a beginning point for you to start the journey of forgiveness, of empathy and of compassion, so that one day soon you will be set free of the chains that bind you from the past.

When we see things from the point of view of others, we realize that what they are doing as not against us but as an action to make up for the love they didn’t get. It’s that simple. In this realization, we can transcend the hurt and the pain because we realize it was never about us in the first place, and so the victim story can be replaced with the story of the hero who overcame the darkness in another with Love.”

I love what Mastin says here.  I believe that there is unbelievable healing in forgiveness.  Forgiving someone can take years of burden off your shoulders not to mention your soul.  It restores relationships, enables new beginnings and allows us to move on to better things.

a915a2174ccef8afc65e23c83ddcb810How can you start practicing forgiveness right now? I’d love to hear you share with me in the comments below.

  • Exercise (a minimum of 30 minutes 6 days a week)
  • Gratitude (take the time to be grateful for at least 3 things in your life daily)
  • Giving (challenge yourself to give without expectation of reciprocation once daily)

Nutrition
Don’t be hard on yourself this holiday season. Our goal is to simply add in one healthy whole food each week. Enjoy your holiday traditions and don’t eat beyond what feels good to you.

Exercise
Resolve to get at least 30 minutes of good healthy exercise in each day (with one day of rest). You will feel better through the holidays. Exercise is good for depression, weight maintenance and your general health.

Gratitude
List 3 things that you are grateful for each day. By focusing on gratitude, we see our lives from a different perspective. Instead of seeing what is going wrong, we see the more important picture of what is right in our lives.

Giving
You don’t have to brag about your giving, but if someone gives and it turns out to be really special, share it with us. You may also want to include it as a part of your goal. In prior years, my goal was to give without cost; it does not have to be an expensive gift, just thoughtful and meaningful.

Do you know anyone who is struggling through the holidays? Invite them along!

This weekend I will work on my own goals and post them here.
